Barbara Parmet Debuts “Burning Love”
On View: August 12 - September 30, 2005
Opening Reception with the Artist: Friday, August 12, 5:30 - 7:30pm
Barbara Parmet has been combining multiple imagery with a camera for over 30 years. Her affinity for telling a story with pictures was galvanized by her first ten years as a photojournalist. Even after she left the newspaper and magazine world, she continued combining photographs as a way of telling stories that went deeper than the daily news.
In 2004, Parmet built an 8-foot, 350-pound sphere made of eucalyptus
branches tied together with 5,000 feet of twine, then she stuffed the open
structure with newspapers covering major world events. With the help of
friends, Parmet transported and burned the structure. Using a combination of
art and documentary photographs, video, and prayer-flags, this installation
reflects upon the project, offering many layers of meaning, at once
provocative, compelling, and deeply-reflective.
