The Long Game - Community Gallery Exhibit

Updated: May 8, 2019

Friday, March 17, 2019 — Friday, July 7, 2019

The Arts Fund is pleased to announce the opening of The Long Game, an exhibition of sculpture, installation, textile and printmaking that embodies the knowledge that choices we make today can connect to intentional desired outcomes, curated by Charles Donelan. The exhibition concept comes as the flipside to Unintended Consequences, Donelan’s curated show at The Arts Fund in 2015, where artists' work incorporated chance and flux in response to a rapidly changing world. A reception will be held at The Arts Fund Community Gallery on Friday, May 17 from 5-8pm during the Funk Zone Art Walk. The Long Game will feature work by Claudia Borfiga, Inga Guzyte, Barbara Parmet, and Blakeney Sanford.

“The four artists in the show -- Claudia Borfiga, Inga Guzyte, Barbara Parmet, and Blakeney Sanford -- all demonstrate a commitment to the long game of creating deep work. Their work asks the viewer to consider not only how much an experience might matter right now, but also how long that sense of meaning and urgency will last. The long game involves learning from and accepting the inevitability of setbacks, failures, and structural obstacles to achievement. It requires a willingness to persist through time-consuming periods of apprenticeship to challenging technologies and craft traditions in the service of an ultimate goal that may take decades to achieve. The Long Game exhibition at The Arts Fund intends to integrate the perspectives of these four artists into a show that inspires and educates a broad audience about this way of thinking about our cultural infrastructure. The choices and alliances we make today will determine the options we enjoy -- or lack – in the future. In the long game, we seek to keep the complex eventualities of the future in view, even as we celebrate the opportunities and confront the challenges we face today.”

Charles Donelan, Curator

The exhibition will be on view until Friday, July 5, 2019 at The Arts Fund Community Gallery, located at 205-C Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101. Regular gallery hours are Thursday-Sunday from 12pm to 5pm and Monday through Wednesday by appointment only. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
